Throughout the year, the Atlantic Heritage Center offers a wide variety of programs and entertaining special events for all ages.  Mark your calendar now and please plan to attend – we look forward to seeing you!  Events are held in the Center’s 2nd floor auditorium unless otherwise noted.  We apologize, but our facilities are not handicapped accessible.

Free Workshop

Oral History Training Workshop

The Atlantic Heritage Center is a partner-archive with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to collect and preserve the personal narratives and memoirs of area veterans.  The workshop will acquaint “free-time” interviewers with guidelines and techniques, and all participants will receive a Field Kit for the Veterans History Project.  Volunteers of all ages are welcome.

The Rise and Fall of Atlantic City’s Railroads

Railroad buffs are invited to hear the story of the rise and fall of Atlantic City’s Railroads as presented by Tony Marino.  Through presentation materials, detailed maps, and interactive discussion, Tony examines significant events past and present related to area railroads.

Risley Homestead Seasonal Tours

The Risley Homestead is one of two 18th century houses in Atlantic County individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was home to many generations of Risley oystermen.

The Atlantic Heritage Center received the Homestead and all of its furnishings by bequest from Virginia Risley Stout in 1989.  The Homestead is open for individual and small group guided tours.  Closed on major holidays.

Jack Irwin, The First Airgoing Wireless Man

One hundred years ago this past October, Jack Irwin, a Marconi Wireless Operator, made history by using wireless to call “CQD” (the old SOS) from an airship to a ship at sea. The rescue was successful and the story behind the rescue situation is intriguing. His airship adventure began in Atlantic City.

John Dilks, local electronics expert, fills in the details of this story and reveals the facts about Jack Irwin’s travelling companion!

Earth Day at Atlantic County Utilities Authority

The Atlantic Heritage Center will have a booth at the Earth Day EcoFair, an annual event that draws thousands of adults and children.  Come out and get acquainted with everything that the Atlantic Heritage Center has to offer. You’ll be captivated by interviews of local veterans’ military experiences as recorded by volunteers from the Veteran’s History Project and much more!

Veterans History Project Interviews

Interviews for the Veterans History Project will be conducted at 10:00am and 1:00pm.  The facility is handicapped accessible.


If you are a Veteran or know a veteran who would like to be interviewed, please contact the Heritage Center in advance to make an appointment.

Place Names of the Jersey Shore

Ever wonder how certain local places got their name?  If so, join speaker Lee Ireland to get the answers! Lee’s book is entitled “Place Names of the Jersey Shore – Why Did They Name It That?”  Lee is a lifelong resident of the shore and will describe the fascinating story of over 300 places located in our backyard and how they got their name.  Books will be available for signing and purchase.

4th Annual Spirit of Christmas’ Past

The elves have enhanced and added to last year’s decorations!  The exhibit is open during the Center’s regular hours of operation and this year’s theme is “Loves a White Christmas”.

 

The exhibit will feature decorated picture frames, painted shells, beaded ornaments grave blankets, wreaths and theme baskets available for sale.  To kick off the event on December 5th, the Cape Atlantic Sweet Adelines will be performing.

 

Mother Christmas is perfecting her cookie recipes for her “Cookie Walk” sale on December 19. Homemade cookies and baked goods will be available for purchase by the pound or in tins. Santa and Mrs. Claus will offer gift bags to preschoolers and read holiday stories throughout the day.
