OUR
LIBRARY
Uncover
your family stories at the Atlantic Heritage Center's extensive
library! Over time, this rich community resource has grown
to become the premiere repository of historical and genealogical
handwritten, typed, and electronic documents relating to Atlantic
County residents, businesses, institutions, and governments.
Some original manuscripts date to the late 1600's. A large
vault provides fire protection for documents.
Collections
Overview
Thousands
of personal and business papers and other documents are preserved,
including over 150 manuscript books and 100 family bibles.
Deeds, wills, diaries, letters, ship's logs, account books, school
roll books, church and cemetery records, marriage and obituary
notices are among the varied resources available to all researchers.
There are also local census records - some indexed and others
on microfilm. Bound local newspapers cover the periods of
1859-1868 and 1905-1955. Single issues date to the 1700's.
The
library shelves contain well over 6000 volumes. The majority
pertain to local and regional historical facts (people and places).
There is also a large collection of ephemera (brochures, clippings,
etc.) as well as city directories and books on antiques.
The postcard and greeting card collection is representative of
all eras and features some of the earliest published. There
is also an excellent local map collection, which includes the
1872 Beers map. And don't miss the amazing assortment of
historic photographs
that will keep you enthralled for hours as you imagine the early
days of Southern New Jersey!
